Two additional notes:

1. It's also a great place for solo dining. Man may not live by bread alone, but this is a superior place to break it alone. Communal tables and open views are a great way to while away an hour or two.

2. One might think diners would present a good alternative on this stretch, but they're (Viand/Nectar/etc.) more expensive than Sandwiched once tip is thrown in and the quality is subpar. Other than the Mansion at 86th and York, I'm hard pressed to name an UES diner whose food I'd want to eat with any regularity.

Tongue taco last night did the trick. I have to say it's more fun to eat it right there than to walk home. I agree with you about the taco taste asymptote and also the McDonald's fries effect. The quality is up at the asymptote, but these guys are best enjoyed when still hella hot.

On an unrelated note. Sam Sifton is gunning for a post NYT cookbook like no one's business. He constantly asserts his authority as an avid amateur cook with his side articles, most of which are good but not that good. All power to him, but the gambit is pretty transparent. Granted, cookbooks are a lot more profitable than foodie memoirs unless you're Ruth Reichl or MFK Fisher.
